Therapy Modalities
Please see below a short summary of the different therapeutic modalities. I will also explain each modality in greater detail during the initial assessment to help you understand which is best suited to your therapeutic goals.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an excellent method of exploring, managing, and resolving emotional and behavioural difficulties. Starting from psychoeducation about your difficulty, CBT helps you understand your concerns from the perspective of your thoughts, feelings, physiological sensations, and behaviour. CBT has a very strong evidence-base for a wide range of presentations, including anxiety disorders and depression. CBT is highly structured and recommended for those who are new to therapy.
Systemic Therapies
While CBT focuses on the individual, systemic therapies will additionally explore the systems and relationships surrounding the individual. This may mean exploring your relationship with your parents, workplace or school, and even your culture. For those who wish to address and resolve relational difficulties, systemic therapies can offer another perspective to the problem, looking not just at the individual but also the wider picture.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
CBT and systemic therapies work with the conscious, meaning that individuals are aware of their difficulties and will often have a specific goal for therapy. However, sometimes the problem is less obvious. You may behave in ways you do not quite understand and sometimes find yourself asking why you behave or react the way you do. To answer the question of why you act the way you do, psychodynamic psychotherapy is an excellent modality to explore what resides in your unconscious and to enact lasting change.
A specialised technique to work with internal conflict: chairwork
When a person experiences internal conflict, it can be imagined as two different parts of the individual arguing with each other inside the individual’s mind. Using chairwork, these different parts can be projected out, allowing the individual to directly communicate with and address their conflicting parts. Chairwork is also used to resolve traumatic events and address relational conflicts from the past and present.
Therapeutic change is enacted through the use of chairs, their positioning, movement, and the dialogue between an individual’s self-parts. Chairwork invites you to embody, explore, and express your emotions rather than engaging with problems on a purely cognitive level, thereby activating your thoughts, feelings, and physiological sensations to enact behavioural change.
